3dsnunez4, Rhapsody has two different parts. One is a subscription service, and the other is an mp3 store.
Anybody can go to Rhapsody's mp3 store (@ mp3.rhapsody.com) to buy mp3 tracks. You don't need a subscription for that. The songs you buy there are yours forever since they are mp3 files that do not have DRM in them. When you get these files, you have to manage them, back them up, and move them around anywhere you like.
If you get a Rhapsody subscription (which is what you are asking about), you get to enjoy a huge amount of music for a monthly fee, but you never actually "own" the music unless you buy it. So, if you transfer music to your phone, or any other compatible mp3 player, it it not yours to keep forever. If you stop your subscription, the music stops playing. You own nothing, but have everything.
Some people are turned off by this. But for me, I have been able to listen to a hundred times more music with Rhapsody than if I had to buy everything. If you like music, it really is the best way to get the most music for the least money.

if i want to burn a cd or put the music on my ipod nano do I have to pay extra in addition to the 9.99 a month? the ad say unlimited music but is that only if your i pod or phone supports the Rhapsody app? is this just listening to music for free?
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
How does it work?.-
ipod nanos, regular ipods do not support subscription downloads. So, you have to purchase the music. Same with CDs. Now, if you have an ipod touch, or a large number of other mp3 players, then you're in business and you get subscription downloads for the monthly fee, and as long as you remain a paid subscriber, you can put whatever you want on your player.

I was billed for all the songs! I wanted a free trail for 2 weeks and maybe the $10.00 monthly membership but instead I found my Card was charged more the $100 for all the songs I downloaded, what a rip off. Don't say it is free and then take all the $$$.

Tim, it sounds like you purchased the tracks instead of just listening to them. The subscription does not include permanent ownership of the music.
Did you not notice all of the messaging saying that you were buying the music? -

I signed up for the premier package which says it includes unlimited downloads for $9.99 monthly. Why am I getting charged for every song I download??
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Why am I having to pay for something I already paid for??.-
See my post above... look for my username "Kansanian" (or do ctrl + f and search...).
If you wish to purchase, you get charged. If you just want to download, you can, but you don't have to... "subscription" downloads must be re-authorized every 30 days, or, you could just stream...
Biggest benefit, you do not HAVE TO download - the concept is difficult at first for some...
Think Netflix - you don't buy or download, you just stream... You CAN buy, but that's your choice.
See my post below Alycia's as well... scroll down a bit on the forum...
Once you 'get it' I think you'll see the value in Rhapsody ;)
I'll say this again anytime - would you rather spend $1 per song, or listen to MILLIONS any time, any place? My library has over 15,000 songs... Have I spent $15,000? Um, no. Sure, I've bought things here and there, but not every single song!
Any questions, let me know. I'm a longtime subscriber and huge fan of the service... Thanks. -

So I just purchased Rhapsody, and just realized i have to pay for every song I thought that you got to have free music downloads for only 9.99 per month. This is crap I have to purchase every song so I can make a CD what a rip off!
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Getting charged to download songs to make a CD!.-
See my post above...
Do you get to burn or keep movies w/Netflix? No.
Rhapsody is like Netflix - you get to stream whatever you want, whenever you want, and, with a compatible device, anywhere you want (I have an android based phone... I can stream using the app...)
Technically, you can download songs, but they need to be re-authorized every 30 days unless you bought them. If you BUY tracks/albums, it's just like any other service. The biggest benefit is that with a subscription, you don't HAVE TO buy ;) ...if you like something, you can check it out, or buy it if you want to...
There is no better service, but it's up to you decide. If you have an android based phone, or an iPhone, you can get the app and stream from anywhere - which is flat out awesome. If you have a Sansa (like an ipod, but better in some ways...), you can put whatever you want on it, as long as you sync it every 30 days...
I guess the concept is difficult at first, but it's really the best deal for music lovers... I've had it for so long that my "library" has over 15,000 tracks, or, over 42 DAYS of music. Think about that. Those are just songs I've "bookmarked" in my "library" - would you rather spend over $15,000 (assuming $1 per track), or $10 per month? The entire catalog has MILLIONS of songs... Even over the span of years, I'm getting more value than any other service on the planet... -

i got charged $10 a month and got charged for all the songs i purchaced...but i thought it was unlimited songs for $10 a month...
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Am I paying per song and an extra $10 a month?.-
The clue is in your question. If you are a subscriber and you "purchase" tracks, you will be charged for them. If you want to listen to tracks without paying for them, don't click on Purchase. You can play songs without downloading but you have to be on line, or you can download them at no additional charge for off line listening or transfer to a Rhapsody-compatible device. You will be able to listen to these downloaded tracks as long as you remain a subscriber and log into Rhapsody at least once a month.

If I just download a song does it charge me as if I purchased the song?
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Downloads?.-
No. Downloading and purchasing tracks are two different things. When you download, the track plays only if your subscription is active. There is no additional charge for this. If you purchase a track, it is yours to keep and is not tied to your subscription.

I just downloaded a couple albums and tried to burn them to a cd on this 60 free trial and it's asking to charge me for the albums!

Trying to charge during trial.-
That's correct. Rhapsody is a subscription service which means you can listen to anything you want but it is not yours to keep. Burning tracks to a CD removes Rhapsody's control or "rights management", thus you have to purchase tracks before you can burn them.
-

-

I wonder if the record clubs back in the day had the same questions when people found out that 20 Records Free weren't really free. At least with Rhapsody's free trial, you don't have to pay "shipping and handling".
-
if i want to listen to all the music in the world, i dont have to pay..i can go to youtube and even watch te videos..rhapsody should charge a higher fee per month and let people burn a limited amount of music
-
-
That's a great idea, except you can't find (virtually) anything you want, transfer tracks to your MP3 player, easily download music for offline listening, and the sound quality is poor. With Rhapsody, since I can transfer music to my MP3 player, burning CD's is not a feature I care about.

I started the 2 month free trial, but i still have to pay to download songs. Also there are some songs i want on Rhapsody.com that are not available in the downloaded software i have. Can anyone tell my why that is?
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Still having to pay to download during free trial.-
You have to pay to purchase songs, but not download them. Rhapsody is a subscription service, which means as long as your subscription is current you can download and listen to all the music you want, and any tracks you do download without purchasing will no longer be playable 30 days after your subscription expires (or if you don't log in to your Rhapsody account within that time).
Purchased tracks are yours to keep, copy, burn to CD, etc. It is also your responsibility to make back up copies of music you own as Rhapsody won't replace them if lost for any reason.
Regarding track availability, some labels and/or artists haven't quite fully embraced the Internet, or the subscription-model as a means to distribute their music, so there are some gaps in Rhapsody's library. The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Frank Zappa are among the most obvious. I also think some artists or labels may retire some albums from time to time. One album that was in your library a week ago may not be available today because Rhapsody's license to offer it expired. This may be by design or simply an oversight and Rhapsody does a pretty good job of renewing licenses when they can. I think most of the time it's beyond their control. -

I was unaware that after you had a subscription to Rhapsody you still had to pay for music? do you pay for music after the free trial or do i have to pay for songs because i'm on my free trial???
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
I didn't expect to be spending so much money.-
Kristyn, Rhapsody is a music subscription/rental service. So, for a monthly fee, you get to listen to and download all the music you want to compatible portable players or smartphones or your Windows PC. (see www.rhapsody.com/electronics) The trial works the same way, there is no difference, it's just that they don't bill you for the duration of the trial. As long as you don't click Buy or Purchase or do anything of the things I list below, there is no additional charge.
However, if you want to:
- Burn a CD with Rhapsody songs (subscription songs, not purchased songs)
- Keep the song forever and ever in non-DRM MP3 format
- Put it on a non-compatible portable player (for example ipod nano)
Then you NEED to purchase the tracks. That's not included in the subscription or trial, and you don't need a subscription to purchase music. If that's what you want to do, it works just like Itunes or Amazon. -
-
-
-
So because I'm on the free trial I have to pay for songs/albums? If I pay $9.99 a month I can download songs unlimited with no charge for songs/albums? because if that is the case the free trial will end up costing me more money then just paying the $9.99.
-
If you want to PURCHASE the songs, it doesn't matter if you're on the trial or not, you have to pay. (I listed the things that required you to purchase songs above).
Otherwise, the trial and the 9.99 work the same way. Again, the trial is simply that they don't bill you the monthly subscription fee for however long your trial is, that's all. But you can still listen to and download all you want during the trial, just don't click on Buy or Purchase unless that's what you're trying to do. -

So ive tried reading everything but got tired so i just figured id post and wait for a response. Now heres the question: can i put songs on my mp3 player during this 60 day free trial without having to pay anything? or not?
-
Cody, If your MP3 player is Rhapsody-compatible, no problem. When Rhapsody transfers a song to the player, it includes the license that tells your player that your subscription is current, and that license is good as long as you connect your player to your computer and log into Rhapsody at least once every 30 days. If your player is not Rhapsody compatible, the license, and the song, won't work. If you discontinue your subscription or fail to log in at least once in thirty days, the songs will become unplayable.
I think any player will work if it includes "Protected WMA files" among the types of files it will play. -
-
-
-
thank you and i have one more question. so once the free trial is over i will no longer be able to listen to the music i put on the mp3 player?
-
Yes, that's correct, Cody. If you want to keep listening to them, then either you need to continue to subscribe to Rhapsody, or you need to purchase the songs.

I am a bit confused! I "bought" a subscription to Rhapsody, but now I have to "pay again" for each song? What is the deal here? Before I "bought" my subscription, I was able to search through the music files and "Buy any songs I wanted to"! I was under the impression that me "buying a subscription", would entitle me to download the songs, BECAUSE I HAD ALREADY PAID YOU! NOW YOU WANT ME TO PAY YOU AGAIN? Sorry but If you want me to pay you twice for the same thing you better look for someone who is stupid! I will NOT EVER SAY ANYTHING GOOD ABOUT RHAPSODY AGAIN! All you are is another RIP-OFF, SCAM ARTIST SCHEME, designed to prey upon the human emotion of goodwill to fill your empty heart!
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
RHAPSODY IN BLUES!.-
Yes, you are confused. Rhapsody is a subscription service, not a download-as-many-songs-your-hard-drive-can-hold service. No rip-off, as Rhapsody has not represented themselves any differently. Nothing in the description of their service does it suggest that you have ownership of the music you download as part of your subscription. You DO however have complete access to millions of tracks that you can listen to any time, any where. For only ten bucks a month, who offers this sort of access????
-
-
Ron before you get all bent out of shape, you need to understand the service. You can certainly download the songs with a subscription for no extra charge, as long as you download them to a Windows PC and/or a compatible mp3 player or phone. Now, if you want to burn them on a CD or download them to a non-compatible player, then you would need to purchase those tracks, and that's not included in the subscription (and you don't need a subscription to purchase tracks)

"Subscribing" and "buying" are two different things. You can listen all you want during your free trial. Any songs that you download without purchase will no longer be playable when the trial ends.

So Rhapsody makes you pay for every month for you to keep the musics you downloaded but its not permanently your's to keep and will charge you for a lifetime? how is that better?
-
-
"Better"? I'm not sure it's better or worse than other business models, only different. It's a matter of personal preference. I like Rhapsody because I don't have to pay extra for every song I want to listen to. I get to listen to any song I want for the same ten bucks a month. The biggest downside to all online music services, IMO, is sound quality so if I were to buy music it would not be in MP3, AAC, WMA, or any other "lossy" formats. Being able to listen to full length tracks without having to pay extra is how it should be.
Add to this the size of Rhapsody's library, the fact that I can listen to anything I want, any time I want, and the ability to transfer songs to my portable player to listen any where I want, for me makes Rhapsody the best value in music services. -
-
What I think most people don't even know is that nobody sells music. Even when you buy a CD you don't "own" the music within. You are purchasing a license that grants you the privilege to listen to that music. The CD itself is proof that you have this license, but there are restrictions on it. For example, you can't play them in a public place such as in a bar or restaurant, you can't make copies and sell them or even give them away, though you can make "back up " copies for yourself, and you certainly can't broadcast them over the air or on line. The trouble is that this is harder to regulate. Bars who want to have a juke box or live music have to pay a fee to ASCAP which allows them to play anything they want.
With the advent of the Internet, they've had to create some new licenses. Buying tracks on line have the same restrictions as CD's. Music subscriptions, such as Rhapsody, are relatively new and required a new type of license. In a nutshell, Rhapsody is the license holder and they are permitted to charge a fee to their subscribers giving us access to the music, which we can listen to at will, as long as we keep paying the fee. This is not unlike the fee I mentioned earlier that bars have to pay to have music in their establishments. If you want to have a track to keep after your subscription runs out, you can buy a license and MP3 copy of that track for an additional fee.
Another new type of license is the Creative Commons license, which is for artists who want to market to consumers directly, and grant them the privilege to share music, or even share remixes of it. You can learn more about this at creativecommons.org. David Byrne of Talking Heads fame gave away digital copies of the original multrack recording of one of his songs and encouraged people to remix it at will and share their efforts. Unheard of, and legally difficult to say the least, without changes to the way music licenses are written. -

I would like to send my Rhapsody library to my WMP so I can download and burn some CD's how do I do this? Liza I have a 2 week trial but if I am told I can't download the music and burn during the trial then whats the point of the trial?
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Transferring Rhapsody library to my WMP.-
Liza, the bottom line is: the trial is for the Rhapsody subscription service. The is no free CD-burning anywhere. If you want to burn CDs, you are required to purchase the tracks. This is the same on any service. Now, if you want to use a Rhapsody subscription, the trial allows you to download the music to a compatible mp3 player or phone and take it with you, to listen to it (and download) on your PC, etc, etc, but CD burning of tracks you have not purchased is not included at any time.

I'm amazed by how many people are confused on how Rhapsody works. If I didn't have Rhapsody, I don't know what I'd do for music. The only free site that I know of (which I visit every now and then) where you can listen to the songs you choose to listen to is Grooveshark. However, Grooveshark (I'm pretty sure) has fewer songs than Rhapsody, which makes me believe that Rhapsody is the best. I listen to so many songs a month that the $10/month is worth it. Why worry about downloading and/or purchasing songs when you can listen to what you want, when you want, wherever you want. It's that simple. If you don't believe me, fine. That's your fault, not mine. Anyway, keep up the good work Rhapsody!

I signed up for the 14 day trial but it is asking me to pay for songs. How do I do this without getting charged? For that matter, my account status is premier. How do I get the $9.99 unlimited activated?
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
14 day trial.-
Rick, the only time Rhapsody should ask you to pay for songs is:
1) You click on the Buy Mp3/Purchase/Buy Album buttons
2) You try to burn a CD with Rhapsody songs that you have not purchased
3) You try to transfer them to a non-compatible portable player, such as an ipod nano.
The trial or the paid work the exact same way. Think of the trial as getting 14 free days of Rhapsody, but there is no difference in functionality, it is exactly the same. -

The trial and the paid subscription are IDENTICAL--there is no difference in features, the only difference is that you don't have to pay the subscription fee for the duration of the trial.
You get unlimited downloads for no additional charge as long as you are a subscriber (doesn't matter if you are on the trial or paid) AND you are:
1) Downloading to a Windows PC using the Rhapsody PC software (up to 3 authorized PCs)
2) Downloading/transferring to a compatible mp3 player, one that supports WMA DRM-based subscription music (see www.rhapsody.com/electronics for a partial list)
3) Downloading via Wifi to one of the supported smart phones (iphone, Ipod touch, Android phones, Blackberry phones)
FYI, clicking on buy/purchase mp3 is NOT the same thing as downloading. If you want music in the unrestricted mp3 format, you need to purchase it, that's not included in any subscription. -

I bought this subscription to download one song to my computer, which I then found out could not be downloaded to my computer.. had they even had the song for purchase, that's right, it isn't free like the ad said... When I first visited the site, the ad stated, "All the music you want. $10 a month.
Connect to the catalog from your computer, through home audio systems, or with mobile apps for iPhone®, iPod touch®, AndroidTM and BlackBerry®. Listen to anything and everything in a catalog of over 13 million songs, (yet not the one song I wanted). Download all you want with the Rhapsody App for iPhone®, iPod touch®, or AndroidTM, as long as you're a member. Sign in and start listening. You don't have to buy songs or manage files" (http://www.rhapsody.com/freetrial).
Liars!!!! Every song has to be purchased!!!
Also, the way in which the site is set up is very frustrating, there are absolutely no instructions on how to use! Good luck figuring it out when your in a hurry! I'd rather go to the store and buy the complete album.. this is a rip off!
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
I canceled 10 minutes after ordering because.....-
Sorry Carin, but you are mistaken on most of your comments, so here are the facts:
There is no "rip off" here. If you don't know what you sign up for, don't.
First of all, if you have a subscription, you DO NOT have to purchase every song. You only have to Purchase songs if any of these points is relevant to you:
1) You want to keep the track if you cancel your subscription, or you feel like you must "own" the track
2) You want to burn a CD with the track
3) You want to use the track in a non-compatible way, meaning: mp3 players that do not support protect Windows WMA (DRM) files, phones that don't have a Rhapsody app built for them, or another music software or video software that does not read files with Windows WMA DRM.
Second, If none of these apply to you, then you can do exactly as stated on the portion that you quoted from the website. There is nothing hidden or wrong here. You can literally listen to 13+ million songs if you so desired, as well as transfer them to compatible portable devices or phones, all for the one monthly charge.
Finally, if all you want to do is purchase a track, just go to mp3.rhapsody.com. No subscription, no nothing, simple and plain music purchasing, and very fast.
Regardless, all of this has been discussed over and over again at length on this thread and other threads. -

Sorry, but Rhapsody sucks balls. If i wanted to stream and listen to any music for free, I would use PANDORA. This is bullshit. Greedy bastards. Rick-
I randomly found this thread by doing a google search to find out more information about Rhapsody because their FAQ's page is currently down. I read through these posts and I had to write a comment to you because of how much patience you have and how funny this is to me. Literally the majority of your responses to each person is basically saying the exact same thing worded differently in some cases over and over. Somehow even with you writing it a billion times, people seem to still not "get it". I knew nothing about Rhapsody and after reading one of your posts, I understood and yet other people purchased this product and no less than I do. Then these same people are the ones complaining about how it works. I did have to say that this made me laugh out loud and it shows the pure ignorance of the human race. A basic skill that should have been picked up at the age of we will say 6 or 7 to read instructions/directions or in this case terms of agreement before completing a task or in this case purchasing an item. Clearly, this skill did not stick with the vast majority because they continue to ask the same asinine questions repeatedly. Thanks for a good laugh and thank you for explaining how Rhapsody works. -
