Android App doesn't work on Droid2
I'm having trouble installing the android app on my new Droid2. It downloads and installs fine but I get this error when I try to open: "Sorry! The application Rhapsody (process com.variamobile.soundwave has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." With buttons to force close or report. It says compatible with Android 2.2, but have you tested it on this phone? Any ideas of when it will work? I love how it works on my wife's LG Ally so I want to have it on my phone too.

I just installed the Rhapsody app on the Droid 2. When I attempt to open it, the following message appears: "Sorry! The application Rhapsody (process com.variamobile.soundwave) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app, but that doesn't help.

I also am having the same exact problem (com.variamobile.soundwave) with the Rhapsody app on my new Droid 2. I uninstalled the app, restarted phone, reinstalled and still it crashes.
At least i can access the flash website on a mobile phone while I wait for a fix. -

It'll be great once they fix this. Just got my droid 2 yesterday and I love it, but I'm missing my rhapsody music.

I’m

Hi all, I wanted to update you and let you know we've procured a Droid 2 so we can now investigate the issue.
I will provide a status update on Monday the 23rd with my findings and if possible, when we'll release the patch.
Thanks for your patience,
R(k)-
Thanks, looking forward to the fix!

If you do not receive the latest phones from the manufacturers pro bono just for being developers, wouldn't you buy then immediately to assure compatability?
Aren't there a few "Android fanboys" you could hire?
We are paying a subscription fee each month. Is that solely for the licenses to play the music?
Shouldn't the software work?
On all of the platforms? -
-
I think it's safe to say that if we received equipment from the manufacturers and carriers, we'd never get stung by these kinds of problems.
Of course the software should work, and if you look at the scope of devices and OS versions we support, it absolutely does. But there are hardware, firmware and software differences between devices. We support 1.5 and up devices, taking advantage of newer APIs where we can, but it's just not feasible to go buy one of everything (and keep the plans going for them all), develop against them all then run QA regression on them all. So we do what we have to- buy the devices that we think are the best sample from a given segment or in the Droid 2 case, acquire when there is a major issue reported that doesn't repro on any other device.
If you live in Seattle and you upgrade your equipment to the latest and greatest frequently, let me know and I'll arrange for you to come in so we can test your device. I'll even buy you coffee afterwards. Seriously.

I appreciate the sentiment, but I think the company owes me a beer or twelve. Thanks for the reply though.
Upon further consideration and research into the problem I have come to the understanding that the latest problem (Droid2 and most of Froyo do not work with app) is most probably a Google issue with their 2.2 codecs. That still does not fix the issues that have plagued the app from the get go and will until Rhapsody invests in more code and debugging. I don't disbelieve that the open platform that is Android is more problematic than the closed Mac OS platform, but the earning potential for Rhapsody is far greater in Android where you can actually sell downloads. Apple will never allow that, much as the Beatles will never be on iTunes.
I will wait a bit longer before I give up and go elsewhere. -

Couple of clarifications here.
The codec issues in FroYo are due to the media framework Google used and how it handles the AAC and AAC+ codecs. That's resulted in a degraded audio quality for services using those codecs (Rhapsody being one). They (Google) have patched the issue and it's slated for future release.
The Droid 2 is a separate issue in that Rhapsody won't run on it at all. I'll have on update on that Monday the 23rd.
There are a couple of issues that have been around for a while, you're right, and I am working on several of those right now. Well, not this second because I'm replying to you :) but I am looking at content and connection issues.
You can actually purchase MP3 tracks on the Mac through mp3.rhapsody.com which I call out here because you mentioned it. And the iPhone app also supports track purchase.
We (Rhapsody Android) are continually making improvements in the app stability, it gets better with every update.
I'll post back on Monday with a Droid 2 update.

Thank you for the further clarifications to the issues at hand. I remodel houses not code for a living, so despite my inner geekery I regularly get ahead of myself.
Great news about the 23rd's update. Thank you for such a clear and tangible response to the question of "when?"
One other question, even though I would prefer you efforts went to the greater good, you speak of the updating of the app in the first person possessive. Are there more of you at work on this? If not I would recommend to those who decide such things that the economy is ripe for further hiring. Then again, I've never met a programmer who truly enjoyed collaboration.

Glad I could help. I try to keep geekery to a minimum, I'm not always successful.
I am definitely not the only Android engineer. I just happen to be the one a) replying here and b) working on the audio and Droid 2 issues.
And, since you mentioned it, we are indeed seeking more Android engineers. http://www.rhapsody.com/about-us#jobs
Have a good weekend, all.

Thanks from me, too. Here's another suggestion while you're at it, based on how it works on my wife's LG Ally. You should add function to search for playlist name. I've been a Rhapscriber since 2003, with way to many playlists to keep scrolling through everytime I want one starting with the later letters. Another option could be a "favorite playlist" section.

You're welcome Andy.
Would you mind throwing that idea in over here as well? http://forum.rhapsody.com/rhapsody/to... I'd like to try and keep them all together. -

FYI Droid 2s have an Android update already; I don't know if this will matter, but just in case . . .
-
And I uninstalled and reinstalled the Rhapsody software after the update; no dice.

DroidX 2.2 suffers the same problem. only 15-20K users have the leaked update at this point. hopefully its the same issue that plagues the droid2

I have had one other problem report on 2.2 Droid X. Hoping to get info on that Monday as well.

R(k) - thanks in advance for the update! I'm a geek in another realm (Linux based CAD EDA software @ AMD) and I know how hard it is keeping up on changing platforms.

I'm eagerly awaiting the update tomorrow. As a note, I tried playing it after the new Froyo patch came out this morning, and still no luck. Thanks for being so responsive!
And while a working rhapsody app is definitely top priority, one other suggestion. The Shuffle feature. I've used winamp, itunes (etc.) and see a pretty good variation when using shuffle. But the Rhapsody shuffle is terrible. On a good day, I'll get a good shuffle for a while without repeats (and if i have 200+ songs in my mixer, I shouldn't be getting many repeats). But I've found it'll often play a subset of 20-25 songs, and then repeat them again in the almost the same order.
It's an issue with the desktop version as well. To me, this is one of the few annoyances I have with rhapsody (it's a great service). -

I've got the same problem as everyone else. Thanks for working so hard on the fix R(k). I will buy YOU a cup of coffee next time im in Seattle (:
Can't wait to have all my Rhapsody music on my phone. I'm getting tired of Pandora. -

EMPLOYEE
I’m
working on it
Here's the update from today.
The good news is, we have the device, can repro the error, and see what the error actually is.
The less desirable news is that it's too early yet to tell how much work it's going to be to fix it. We will fix it though.
The slightly more desirable news is that we're very focused on making this work ASAP for you Droid 2 customers and your Droid X brethren who have the 2.2 update.
Will update again when I have something really awesome to say like "we fixed it".
Please standby.

There is a new status update for this problem, Please see here for full info.

This is an update to notify customers that we have released the fix for the Droid 2 an Droid X running 2.2 to the Android Market and it is now available for download.
Customers with Rhapsody installed should start seeing update notifications soon.
This is an optional update for all Rhapsody users, but is required for the Droid 2 and Droid X with 2.2 OS.-
Appreciate the efforts so we can enjoy Rhapsody on our fancy FroYo Droids. I think the Android Rhapsody version is BETTER than the iOS version....iFans who only use iTunes are missing out and wasting money if they don't try Rhapsody!
