I totally agree. I have always thought that if you can't deal with bugs, don't download beta software. Just wait until a final version is out. Doyle (and others who have engaged in rants against Rhapsody) should just bow out and check back when Rhapsody has worked out the bugs.

Why (on my storm) do the songs just drop in the middle of the song and jumps to the next song? and also when i fast forward or when a song ends rhapsody just hangs up, connection is not an issue. signal strength is high. please help, i love my Rhapsody!!!

Good news... thanks for the update.

I feel the volume indicator is like way too wide (it covers practically the whole screen) and when viewed in landscape on the BB Torch it is just plain loooooooooong i tell ya.
In comparison the BB Media player volume indicator covers like two-thirds of the screen and Pandora's volume indicator takes up like half of the screen. I am just saying.-
Good catch, Don. I'll file a bug.

When selecting Top Tracks, Top Artists, or Top Albums tabs via the trackpad on the BB Torch, the Top Tracks tab and sometimes the Top Albums tab remains highlighted white/glowing after the blue highlight moves to the next selection. This issue was present in the previous version also.
And since a picture is worth a thousand words, here is a video of the phenomenon, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4fPBD... . -
-
Thanks for the feedback Don.
That is currently the design, as the white tab is the active tab, and the dark tabs are inactive, and the blue highlight moves between the tabs so that a click on an inactive tab makes it the active one.
We are aware that we could improve the user experience with the tabs.

just wanted to let you know that while I was on the blackberry contacts screen on my Torch, it has a three-tabbed display exactly like the Rhapsody app and based on the fact that the tab highlighter did not loop from the first-last or last-first selection, it was intuitively easy to select one's intended target function. so i think it'd be a [real] good idea to have the selector stop at the first/last selection instead of looping back around. i'm just sayin'.

I agree. Coincidentally, I am reviewing the code change for that exact fix now.

It would be nice to have a use only WiFi feature on the app, kind a like pandora. Very usefull for those who dont have unlimited data plans.
-
Thanks, Julio. I've entered a feature request for this. (Which doesn't mean we will actually add the feature, but we'll give it consideration.)

I have run the app on my BB 8520 with 5.0 OS. It works OK, although it is a little slow loading tracks. However, my BB will not receive phone calls while the app is running.
-
This is, unfortunately, standard behavior for phones which are on the EDGE network -- it's not limited to Rhapsody. The second post in this forum thread (even though it's formally on the Nexus One) gives details:
http://www.nexusoneforum.net/forum/ne...
So if you are streaming content, phone calls don't come through. If you can, use WiFi. Otherwise, check your voice mail now and then. -

I can report that the update (1.0.3.3) solved the problems I was having with playback on my Storm 1 (9530, OS5). Previously I was getting the problem in which one and a half songs would play, then the app would freeze. Now I can play albums, stations and playlists with (almost) no problems. I can get the app to lock up if I skip too many songs, and then I will have to exit and restart, but I if just leave it alone I get no problems.
However, some of my playlists still will exhibit the previous behavior, but oddly, most play just fine.
So, I'm happy. Now I'm waiting for access to my library and the ability to download directly to the phone!-
Thanks, Mike!

I have a BlackBerry Torch and it was working fine; however, sometime last week, songs started to take longer to buffer and play both on 3G as well as Wi-fi, all of the sudden, it plays one song and then freezes. I have to reboot my phone every time. I uninstall and reinstalled the app but it did not work. I am seriously thinking about cancelling my subscription as I rather listen to Pandora or Slacker now that I have issues every single time I want to listen to Rhapsody. I hope you guys can fix this soon.

Jim, not so. it does it on other genres also. i've just been too lazy to report my on-going issues. the rhapsody app has been frustrating me so much that i haven't been using it for sanity purposes.
-
-
Antonio, what genres do you listen to when this happens?

Jim,
I just wanted to let you guys know that I was able to listen to music without the Torch rebooting finally. It happened after the last update and also BB had two updates and so somewhere in there something fixed it. I listened to that Sarah Fimm album again and was able to listen to it all the way through for the first time. Woohoo.
I still wish the track load times were not so incredibly slow at times though. And I am connecting via WIFI.
In addition; it would be nice to have a skin/theme changer option as I really do not prefer the new color scheme.-
Thanks for letting us know, Don. Good to hear that you are having better success.
The time to start play back issue appears to be tied to the BlackBerry OS 6 -- it takes several seconds longer than on OS 5 (which itself takes longer than OS 4.6). We're working with RIM to try to find a solution or workaround. May take an update from RIM for this, such as the forthcoming OS 6.1.
I'll file a request for the theme changer. -

Not sure if this is a bug or a feature request.
When playing a Playlist on my BB, I don't see the name of the playlist in the Now Playing screen or in the Queue. It would be nice to know what playlist is currently loaded somehow.
I am listening to playlists I created from old K-Tel compilation albums like Rock 80, Dimensions and Full Tilt. So in my mind, I'm listening to an album, not a playlist. When I look at the Now Playing screen, in addition to the current track I'd like to see the name of the playlist so I know what album I'm grooving on. Does that make sense?
Thanks!
Jason-
I'll add a request for this.

i just upgraded to the latest app and it worked one time and them refused to work subsequently thereafter. it'd get to the home screen and then get stuck on the waiting icon indefinitely.
an uninstall and re-install did not help. i finally decided to uninstall but via the blackberry desktop software and re-install and now all is well. i remembered before that this issue was relevant to the Torch only. its not fun.-
This won't help you with the BB issue, but...
After beta-testing and using the various versions of the BB app, I broke down and bought an iPod Touch. The iOS version of Rhapsody ROCKS and makes the BB seem like an embarrassing afterthought. Still use my BB for everything else, but carry the iPod just for Rhapsody and the extra device is just worth it -- not something I thought I'd find. -

rhapsody is not working (again) on my Torch. at the home screen, it just sits there and won't allow me to select anything. i can move the highlight bar, but then nothing executes further than that. at other times, it will never connect to the network and eventually displays a time-out message. a few more tries later and it will decide to connect. then it will go back to the not allowing me to select anything. this all started right after i upgraded to the latest version. heeeeeeeeelp!

I have been experiencing network errors with the app if I do not use it for a day or so. Then when it finally connects, it is happy until the next time I don't use it for a day or so. It occurs upon app start up only.

I just got some more information. I have been exiting and starting the rhapsody app around town to see if it has network problems. All was going well until coming back from lunch about thirty minutes ago. I had started the app and it seemed to be hung and was not responding to any keypresses or highlighting my selections (using the trackpad). And there was no spinner either. I am used to such behavior whenever there seems to be a network problem with rhapsody. I was on 3G at the time. I usually just wait 4-5 minutes for the network timeout message to eventually appear but this time I was walking into the building and as soon as I got within WIFI range, my Torch switched to WIFI and the app started working.
I also did an experiment where I started up the app with the mobile network and WIFI disabled and the app immediately displays a network time-out message. That is not too bad of an experience but when it takes 4-5 minutes to display the same message while the app is not responding, it's not a whole lot of fun. -

Are you guys still working on a feature that will let you download songs for listening when the cell connection is slow or gone? The delay in gettings songs to start has caused me to fall back on some of my other music options until you can cache content on the media card.. Has that feature been added? I haven't been following the progress as closely as I did when this app first came out.
Thanks!- view 2 more comments

For what it's worth this is probably the single best feature you could add. I've stated last year when I started the beta testing that Rhapsody on my daughters itouch is phenominal and continues to be leaps and bounds ahead of my Blackberry version. I love Blackberry and I love Rhapsody but delays between songs while streaming, even on wifi, is very frustrating.
-
-
We are working on support for downloading music to your phone for offline playback. Some of the delays are due to the media playback engine in the BlackBerry and we are working with RIM on improving that as well.

Would you guys please strongly consider getting rid of or at least making an option for that auto-play feature gosh dang it?
I was able to handle rhapsody occasionally playing songs out of the blue from it, but then it takes so long to load non-cached tracks on the Torch that when I started the app, a coworker then distracted me and while I was talking to him a short ways from my phone, a few minutes later the app started blasting a song all on its own. This has happened before while the phone was in my pocket also.
I do not like that auto-play feature. Ugh. -
-
Don, I passed this request along.
-
thanks Adam.
sorry for being so colorful but you'd have to be there. just imagine your phone blasting music all on its own in your department when you are away. not fun at all. -

Don,
I've implemented this change so it will be available in the next release. -

it appears as if RIM is pushing out core updates like there is no tomorrow. today i updated to 6.0 Bundle 2342 and now the rhapsody app does not work.
what happens is when i start rhapsody, it seems like it's going to start for about a second, and then immediately exits. my other apps are working just fine though. suggestions? -
-
Don,
We just got the notification about the OS update for our Torch as well. We are seeing if we can reproduce the problem.
You could see if reinstalling the app would help. It could be failing to start because of bad data that it is reading at startup. A reinstall that clears that data could then solve the problem.

I have been recently starting and re-starting rhapsody all over town in order to recreate my (Torch) network issues and I feel I finally stumbled onto something tangible.
The problem appears to occur only on 3G connection and only when there is sporadic/spotty signal quality. I was at the beach yesterday where cell towers are more scarce and when I started up rhapsody it immediately exhibited the infamous "looks like its hung and doesn't respond to any keypresses" scenario. I checked my signal strength on the home screen and I only had one bar. I also noticed that the phone was briefly switching down to EDGE from 3G. I know from prior experience that when rhapsody gets into this mode, it will do a network time-out five minutes later.
During this wait period, I decided to try other apps to see how they were reacting. The BB browser seemed to be running fine but maybe it was loading cached information though. I then ran the Fandango app because I was thinking about going to see a movie. I noticed the Fandango app was running a bit slow and the phone had switched to EDGE. When it switched back to 3G, Fandango was responding much better.
OK the differences I saw between the Fandango network lag and Rhapsody is 1) even though Fandango was lagging, there was a rotating circle that at least clued me in that it was still doing something. Rhapsody app just sits there like a dear in the headlights and no spinner., 2) Fandango app at least lets you go back or exit when it is lagging. Rhapsody is non-responsive., 3) Fandango exhibited about a one minute network lag. Rhapsody app takes five minutes to time-out.
I feel what would really help out is 1) to have some kind of indication that rhapsody is doing something, and 2) to at least have it respond to keypresses so you can choose to quit the app if you happen to not feel like waiting five minutes for it to network time-out.
I also noticed after trying and trying and trying repeatedly to connect, the rhapsody app finally gets it's act together. This took about fifteen minutes and several five minute network time-outs.
I believe there is a problem with the rhapsody app during poor 3G network connectivity at start up. I do not believe it is a signal strength issue because I had -81dB signal the whole time it was struggling.
Later when I was in 3G areas with four to five signal bars, rhapsody app works quite flawlessly and zippy (not mentioning the song start lag inherent to the Torch though).
BTW, I am on AT&T.- view 8 more comments

Don,
We've been working to improve the ability of the app to know about the network. Our next release has this plumbing in place so we know whether the network is available over cellular or wi-fi network connections. You will also have the option to have the app only use Wi-Fi if desired. If you try to navigate to a page while the network is unavailable, you will instantly get a message that the newtork is not currently available.
Part of the problem is that your device has an issue with taking a long time to buffer data for playback. We've been working with RIM on this, and I believe that they have a fix for the problem -- although I have not dealt directly on this issue
and could be mistaken.
We've also added an option to turn off resuming playback at app startup. This option, along with the network improvements, should help mitigate the problem for you. -
-
Right before I got this message I just had rhapsody exhibit it's infamous not allowing me to make any selections at the home screen during startup mode once again but this time I was in a 3G area that had five signal bars. This leads me to believe that the issue probably has nothing to do with the signal strength but more so the signal quality.

Is there a reason I cannot control the volume via Rhapsody when connected to Creative D100 Bluetooth Speakers? BB Media player volume controls it just fine. Rhapsody was able to remotely control Spracht Aura Blunote Bluetooth Speakers though.

He has a similar problem to mine. He may be calling what I call skipping, hiccups. I was also able to fix mine by power cycling the D100 and restoring its factory defaults. The skipping has not since repeated but that may be because there is only one bluetooth profile at this time.
If I decide to re-add multiple profiles to the D100, I have a feeling the skipping will re-occur. It seems as if the D100 might have been getting confused with my BB Torch and laptop being too close together.
The skipping clearly is not a Rhapsody App issue but [I do feel] the unable to remote control the D100 volume is. Just re-iterating to ensure we are are the same page here. -

Thanks for the added research on this, Don.

I am still encountering not being able to do anything with Rhapsody when it is having network connectivity issues. I really wish there was another experience besides waiting five minutes for the Network Error message to appear.
The app responds to nothing during that time (and there is no spinner either). I can exit to the Blackberry home screen but that doesn't help matters because I am actually trying to use Rhapsody. This happens in areas with 5 signal strength bars (but 5 bars does not necessarily equate to good signal quality though).
I actually do not have a problem with Rhapsody [occasionally] having network connectivity issues. It is more so that it takes five minutes to eventually inform you of such is what my problem.-
Yeah, 5 bars indicates the potential signal strength, but not how much of it you can actually access. Using an iPhone in San Francisco is such a case: good signal strength, but all sucked up by other users and nothing you can actually get hold of. (Or something like that.)
(With the Torch, you're on AT&T, right? Maybe it's the same scenario.)
This is unfortunately not a problem we have encountered in our regular testing, might not be easy to replicate outside of specific carrier/geography combos. I will file a bug for it, maybe the Dev team will have some ideas on providing better response time, though. -
-
I'll be glad when the download to device feature becomes available.
I remember when I used to use Pandora and Slacker, I did not have these same network problems. I think I am going to re-install them and see what happens for comparison sakes. -

I am on Verizon, and just started to have the problem where for some reason, Rhapsody will skip over songs be it in an Album (when you select the entire album),or a playlist. It seems to always be the same song (Tried to play "The Book of Mormon" Soundtrack, and it skipped from 1 to 3, then all the way to track 8. I have a Blackberry Bold running 6.0 Bundle 2333
-
By the way, I am able to play the 'missing' (skipped) songs through the web and my desktop without any issues
-
-
Changes in the most recent release affected the behavior of phones without SD memory cards, causing them to skip songs over about 4 minutes long (and the following song as well, regardless of length). We are working on solutions, but our best recommendation is to buy a memory card and insert it; 2GB cards can be had for as little as $10 or less. (If you already have a card, try removing and reinserting it, or check that it isn't already nearly full.)

i'm still having issues with the Torch taking forever to network timeout. i wasn't even at the beach this time. i was at Wal-Mart parking lot chillin' and decided, hey i would like to listen to Rhapsody. but then Rhapsody app had other plans. it would not respond after the home screen, not even the spinner. finally about five minutes later, i get the network timeout, unable to connect to server message.

well hello everyone. long time, no comment (complain). i have long since been the proud owner of a 9860, but unfortunately the same problems i had with the 9800 are still present.
i must admit that at least the network time-outs are not taking five plus minutes to time-out.
the track caching lags are still quite evident also. would be nice to listen to music without those undelightful pauses.
And for the life of me, I really wish someone would consider having the volume slider appear when the volume is maxed so that I can readily know that the volume is in fact maxed instead of continually trying like a tard and then end up inadvertently advancing to the next track.
Every other music app shows max volume, so then you can go, oh ok, its already maxed, and you don't keep trying to max the dang thing (like a tard).
Am I asking for too much?
Oh and since Rhapsody is infamous for each album having a different max volume level, that makes it even more challeging. I'm just saying. -
