I’ve been using Rhapsody off and on for several years, and now I’m using primarily the android client on my phone, so most of my thoughts relate to that, but probably to the desktop client, etc. too. The service has lots of positives, but there are some real shortcomings that I’d love to see changed – I’d love to hear what others have to say about these suggestions (I know some have been mentioned before, so it would be great to get an update):
1. The search feature really needs to be improved so that when you are searching for tracks that have been recorded many times by many different groups you can quickly find the specific version you are looking for. Try looking for a piece of jazz or classical music that has been recorded by hundreds of artists. There needs to be some sort of keyword search where you can include the track name and artist (ex. “Caravan” “Ellington” to filter for only Duke Ellington tracks of Caravan) With Classical music it gets even worse because of generic naming like “Symphony #9” and the fact that sometimes the actual composer isn’t included properly in the track info, and the “artist” is usually, but not always, the group that performed it. It would be ideal to be able to search for something like “Symphony 9, Beethoven, London Philharmonic” for instance to really drill down into the search results you want. If you don’t spell something exactly right, sometimes you are out of luck too.
2. Rhapsody Radio should be a great way to explore and discover new music. I know this has been suggested before, but I’m baffled by the fact that the history or queue of the radio tracks isn’t displayed. If I’m doing some work away from my phone or driving in the car listening to a radio station and come across a track I really like, if you don’t have your hands free to immediately take a look at what is playing and quickly add it to your library, you will lose the chance and may not know or remember later the title, the group, etc. to be able to look it up. This stinks!
3. I think this may already have some changes in the pipeline, but the queue in the android player is frustrating due to the fact that when you have long queues of stuff (which I often do) there isn’t an easy way to scroll to the spot where you are currently playing. Try driving in your car and have to swipe your finger down several screens to search for the little now playing speaker icon next to the track so you can go to items that are close by. Some sort of “Jump to” or other redesign would really help.
4. I wish that there were ways to star or checkmark tracks in the queue so that you could do bulk actions, like selecting 10 tracks and then moving them all at once into a playlist, rather than having to go through a several step process to add each track one at a time.
5. When you long press on a track in the queue, there is an option for “More by this Artist” but there isn’t an option like “View this Album”. It takes several steps to select “More by this Artist”, then “All Albums”, then scroll to find the album that has the track you were just listening to. It would be really handy to have a one click jump to the entire album that the track comes from right from the now playing or the queue.
Well, that’s my two cents anyway – thanks!
Ideas for Several Improvements to Rhapsody Android and other clients/apps

These are all great suggestions. I mostly use the iOS app and the desktop client, so my perspective is a little different.
Number 1 is needed in all the clients. This has been a long term issue with Rhapsody.
Number 2 is actually implemented in the desktop client, but not the mobile apps. I like this idea, too, but I bet some people would be annoyed at having a bunch of stuff added to their queues.
Number 3 used to be implemented in the iOS app. While the queue was being displayed, if you tapped on the word Queue at the top of the screen, it jumped to the playing song. When the iOS app implemented "inline" playback in addition to Queue playback, they took this feature away.
Number 4 is something I have long wanted. Multi-select needs to be implemented in a bunch of places in the mobile apps.
Number 5 is implemented in the iOS app, so it's another example of a difference between the apps. -

1Thank you for the feedback! Here are some of my responses:
1) Searching like this is a overhall of the entire search system, not something we can specifically fix just for Android. I know that fixing search is a big priority, but I can't comment on when this work will be done, since it's not Android specific.
2) You are correct that right now we do not display a history of tracks for the mobile app. In our new tablet app, which is in beta, we do have a listening history section that will display a list of tracks that you have listened to. We do have a work item to add this feature into the mobile app also. However, in the meantime, you can always go to rhapsody.com and checkout your listening history there. I know it's not as convenient to do this, but it is a way to actually see the radio tracks that you listened to.
3) Yup, the queue is in a desperate need of redesign. There is no easy way to go to the currently playing track in the queue. The now playing button in the hardware menu button will jump to the Now playing portion of the queue, but that is the opposite of what you are looking for. I'll log this up so we can get a work item going for queue changes.
4) Same as 3...I'll add it to the same work item for queue redesign.
5) Yes, this is actually really frustrating for me also. We have these options in other places in our app, but have not converted the queue options to do this yet. I know we already have a work item in place for this, but I'll add it to the same queue redesign also, just to make sure it's covered.
Thanks again for your feedback!
Cindy-
Thanks Cindy for your responses :) I'm glad to hear that some of these items are being considered or are already in the works one way or the other.
Does the Android team have any sort of official updates/blog posts/etc. we can check out from time to time to see what's being worked on or what's planned for the upcoming software updates?
Since it isn't an Android specific problem, is there any other way to find updates about the issues with the searching? Scanning through the forums here shows that this has been a major concern for multiple years, with little to no update on the progress from Rhapsody, in some cases, for two years or more (for instance, this discussion here where tempers seem to be getting pretty HOT, with no recent responses/updates from Rhapsody: http://forum.rhapsody.com/rhapsody/to...)
Again, thanks for your responses, I appreciate it! -

Strongly agree with every suggestion here. I spend all my time in the queue with long lists of the same music I listen to often. Even with the new updates I need a better way to manage the queue. I'm usually using the player on my phone and I'm usually in my car.
Also, since the Nov update I have been unable to access the queue when the app is restarted. I have to add a song to get back to it. -

Has anyone acknowledged that the android app freezes every time you load another app or browse the internet? Does anyone that works for Rhapsody read the reviews on Google Play? They're atrocious, and they all say the same thing. The app won't let users multitask - it just shuts down.
And why is it so slow to load songs? And why do songs stop mid way through at random times even though I stream via wifi? All these things are SO annoying.
Don't even get me started on how bad the queue is... -
-
Brian, I use the Android app daily, and it multitasks for me just fine. Also, it's a little over the top to say the reviews are "atrocious" when 68% of them are 4 or 5 stars.
I agree that having to use the queue is limiting. The Rhapsody guys have said that they are working on an inline play mode like the iOS app has. Then, you can play a playlist or an album on its own, or you can still use the queue to create an on-the-fly mix. -
-
Hate to say I've had the same problems as Brian. Also, the opening page is great in theory, but it takes so long to load on my phone (Galaxy Note 1) that it defeats the purpose.
Was also annoyed that the ability to move tracks around in the queue is gone. It was a bit unwieldy, unlike the great "Mixer" in other versions, but still a useful feature.
Wound up switching to a competing subscription app for my Android for now, and just use the Rhapsody desktop app - which I still really like - at work & home. -
-
@Mgibb - Take a look at the reviews since the update. Most are 2 and 1 star reviews. Most people are complaining that the app crashes when you load another app. Even Rhapsody has recognized it and is trying to get an update out. If you don't experience it, you are one of the lucky few.
They need to fix this app ASAP so it's reliable. They need to implement lock screen controls (like Amazon's awesome MP3 app). And they need to fix the queue.
@Rob R - which subscription service did you switch to? Do you like it? It seems they all have problems, and I don't want to trade one set of headaches for another...- view 1 more comment

I have both spotify and rhapsody and use spotify when multitasking because of the same facts that Brian noted. One should be able to go the net without the music abruptly going away (force closing , freezes). This has been a problem for a long time. Sp otify beats the Rhapsody app on this point.

I would like to add that I want it to be easier to set up storage of downloaded music on SD card. It used to be easy to do, now you have to do it through advanced settings. Where did the app to sd function go?

Brian, maybe I'm one of the "lucky few" as well, but I run the latest Rhapsody android app on AT&T's latest ICS version (4.0.4) on a Galaxy SII, and the app does not crash when I load or use other apps at the same time. It continues to play.
I believe what Rhapsody has indicated they are doing is re-writing the playback engine due to issues that some people have with some devices and songs cutting in the middle. But I can't say I've had those issues on my configuration.
Also, just to keep the facts straight, I just went to the Android marketplace, and the average rating for the Rhapsody app on the latest version is 3.8. You do not get to 3.8 if most reviews are 1 or 2 like you said. Just on the first page, which I sorted by latest version and newest review, I see: 3 3-star reviews, 1 1-star review, 1 2-star reviews, and 5 4-star reviews. The second page has 5 5-star reviews, 2 2-star reviews, and 3 1-star reviews.
I've tried apps from MOG and Spotify as well. I found them much worse than Rhapsody's implementation for the way I use the service.
Stinks that you are having problems, and it's totally fair to bring them up, but it's also fair to keep the facts straight and not generalize.
I hope you get your problems fixed soon. I do agree w/ the queue, it needs some work (along with a few other things you didn't mention). -

I recently switched from using a MP3 player to using my IPhone mobile app exclusively. I am disappointed that I can't play my purchased tracks through the mobile app. I am told by tech support that I have to use a mobile MP3 app separate from the Rhapsody app. This is not practical when wanting to play a group of songs through a playlist while working out at the gym, etc. It wouldn't be so bad except these songs are not available as subscription tracks, only through purchase.

The Android App is what has prevented me from quitting Rhapsody alltogether. I had a Sandisk based player and downloading channels and tracks were an exercise in futility. My kids stopped using it and I had actually downgraded to the basic plan just to keep basic access active.
When I saw the Android app and it's ability to download tracks for offline play, I upgraded back to the Premier Plus tier for 14.99 a month
The Rhapsody App for Android allows me to easily download tracks and play them offline. I have 3 androids in my family and each of us can download tracks simultaneously with the Premier Plus plan. This saves me untold thousands of dollars in music for my kids. Since we have 3G phones we do not do much streaming unless connected to WiFi, and my kids love to download music directly to their phones.
The ability to download playlists is also great.
One enhancement I would like is Rhapsody Channels for Android. Allow users to download offline radio so that we can just pick a genre and download approx 2 to 4 hours of music. You can implement it just like Channels for the Sansa players. One the track is played, erase it from the device and upload another track from that genre when you resync the channel.
I agree with a lot of the enhancements, but the biggest frustration for me is the track order bug. When an album has 2 CD's then the application does not play the tracks in order from CD 1 then to CD 2. Instead track 1 is played from CD 1 then track 1 is played from CD 2. Sure, I can rearrange them in a playlist and correct the error, but it's a pain in the butt.
This seems to only affect downloaded tracks, as the server side application will stream them in proper order. However when the player is in offline mode, or playing downloaded tracks, it does not order properly in multiple CD releases.
Otherwise, I love the app and hope for the continued success of the customer. I have even convinced some of my friends to use Rhapsody for their I-Phones. Getting Apple users to ditch I-Tunes is a pretty impressive feat. -

I wish that Rhapsody had incorporated some of the things that Napster did very well when they bought them out. Specifically, the ability to create a playlist of similar songs based on a song you were listening to! This was a great way to discover new music. Also, it would be nice to have more community involvement like Napster had. You could surf other users play lists and play them when you found that contained songs or titles that peaked your interest.

Thanks!
Inline playback means that if you start playback of an album or playlist, it just starts playing right there, without being added to the Queue. The Queue is still available if you want to mix some albums together without a playlist, which I do pretty often. I really like the way it is designed, with both the Queue and inline playback.
Any time any list of music is playing, whether it be the Queue or any other list, there is an option to toggle between album art view or list view. The list view always scrolls to show the currently playing track.
The Rhapsody guys have mentioned that they would like to unify the apps, but other priorities have gotten in the way.
