iOS 4 and the Rhapsody App

Dear Rhapsody Customers,

With the release of iOS 4 and the related issues some users are reporting with the current version of the Rhapsody app, we wanted to provide a status update of where we stand on support for iOS 4.

In summary, we are in the final stages of development and testing of a new version of the app that is fully compatible with iOS 4, including bug fixes for all known issues. Expect more specific news on this topic before the end of the week.

The iOS 4 upgrade clears local application caches, which hit our app particularly hard since we depend on that data for offline playback. If you have upgraded to iOS 4 and are experiencing serious issues like failures with playlist downloading, we recommend that you uninstall and reinstall the Rhapsody app.

This process should put your app in a better state, although it will not resolve all known issues. You may experience crashes during playback (especially while trying to download and stream music at the same time). You will also see a handful of visual bugs that do not impact usability.

Now, let’s talk multitasking. We have an internal build of the app with background audio working, as well as seamless interaction with docks, remotes, bluetooth headsets and other accessories that support Apple’s standard multimedia controls. This is a component of the Rhapsody experience on iPhone we have all been craving, and we absolutely cannot wait to deliver this to you soon.

In the meantime, we thank you all for your patience.

Many Thanks,
Chris

iPhone App Version 2.0.3 is Now Live!

    Dear Rhapsody Customers,

We’re happy to announce that version 2.0.3 of our iPhone app is now live in the App Store. This version addresses the memory crash issues some iOS4 users have been experiencing.

Many of you have expressed frustration with how iOS 4 is performing on your 3G phones, and to some extent 3GS phones as well. We believe that 2.0.3 will greatly improve your experience.

As always, please let us know all your feedback on version 2.0.3 here: raves or rants, we want to hear them!

    Thanks and keep listening,
    Thomas
    Rhapsody Mobile Team

    Version 2.0.3 release notes:
    - Improved longevity for devices running iOS 4 (especially 3G and to a lesser extent 3GS phones).

    - Bug fix for issue where extended playback stops when Rhapsody is in the background.

Yea David, still on wifi. It happened about every other song using a playlist with 300 plus songs. Hope this helps. I'm always willing to help.

P.S. I will switch to a station and see what happens.

"can you see if it's on WiFi or 3G and if it switches back to WiFi when you wake it up?..."
Yes I can! I'm not in a 3G area and only get E coverage. When I first wake up the phone its' showing E, then switches to my wifi. Now what?

I will say that .3 is far superior to any version I've run and that I'm very happy so far. I think these residual problems can be fixed and even if they aren't I'm finally saying to myself, "I'm getting my money's worth".

I noticed a couple of strange behaviors today.

    1. Updating the playlist on my desktop did not automatically update the playlist on the iPhone. I had to close the app (exit the background process) and restart the app, for the playlist to sync

    2. When streaming music from my queue, the music playing stops when the network switches from 3G to WiFi. I noticed the reverse to stop music playback as well. The only way I could get music to start playing again, was to select a new track, or start playing the current track from start (by clicking the track in the queue).

    Is this normal ?

I am running the 2.0.3 version of the app on iOS4 on a 3GS

    • Mgibb - Can you explain again how to get your online playlist to update with your mobile app. I created one on line last night, when I opened the mobile app it did not update. I closed it and reopened and again nothing. I tried signing out and signing back in and again no updates. I even disconnected my wifi connection and then enabled it, went intot he app and it still did not update. Any suggestions?
    • sikorasc, the only way I have found to update my playlists is to completely exit the app, start it back up, and then go to "My Playlists" within the app. It will then say "Updating playlists". This will cause new playlists to show up or deleted ones to disappear. However, I think that if you have edited a playlist, you have to tap on that particular playlist to bring up its list of tracks. The app then says "Updating Playlist" and then it will be synced.

I only have a 3G phone, so I don't have any mulittasking issues to think about. If you are multitasking, make sure the app is completely closed and not just "minimized" before you try to refresh the playlists.

    sad I’m frustrated
I installed the update and not only is my Ipod still erasing all of my downloads now it starts skipping and locking up. This was supposed to be the fix and now the problems are worse than ever.
    • David (Official Rep) July 29, 2010 18:55
Hi Stephanielachelle223, the playlist issue has been there since 2.0.2 - it's related to track cleanup code interacting with bad content on the server. We've submitted a build with a fix to Apple. It's a pretty rare case but we decided to submit a one off build to fix it anyway.

To get around this you'll need to figure out which playlist is causing the issue and then either delete the whole playlist or find the track in it and delete that. The track causing the problem will be the track that shows up in the list but doesn't actually play back. When it comes up in the queue, playback will either hang or it will skip over it to the next track.

To narrow it down what you can do is first remove all the downloads from each playlist. Use the press and hold menu on the orange playlist titles in your library to get to the option to remove the downloads. Next you'll need to download the playlists that were downloaded at the time you experienced this, one at a time. After each playlist is downloaded, individually, close the app and relaunch it to see if the downloads go missing. If they do then you've found the playlist containing the problem track, if they don't then continue to download them, one at a time, shutting down the app between each one.

Terribly sorry about this. I'm very hopeful that the build will go through the review process quickly and we can get it to you very soon.

  • Sikorasc, is your iTouch the 8GB model? I'm curious to see how this update performs on the "problem" combination: the 3G phone (and certain iTouches) with iOS4 installed.
    • David (Official Rep) July 29, 2010 18:59
mgibb, I'm running that exact combination right now. I hit an issue the very first time I locked the device - it stuttered and playback went silent but did not crash. I went back in and restarted the track. It's possible it was a side effect of network starvation (my wireless is being flaky) but I'm not confident yet. Since then the device has been streaming for over two hours without issue. Just wanted to give you an FYI that there may still be a problem on that combo. Another user running the same combo ran into repeated stalls between tracks after three hours. That's what I'm investigating right now.
    • Mgibb - my iTouch is a 32GB. I only have a couple of movies on it at this time. I did not sync my itunes library in hopes the extra memory would allow the Rhapsody app to work with out any issues. If the Rhapsody app continues to work this well I will likely never go back to iTunes unless I really want to own an album. This app is great!

I just updated my Rhapsody App to 2.0.3, but I still lose playback when I navigate away from the Rhapsody app. Am I doing something wrong.

    Thank you.

    • David, it is intermittent and it usually comes in waves. It seems to mess up the most when I am using a dock connector, but also when the phone is just standing alone. With a dock connector it is really bad, the playback stops almost every time I navigate away and lock. When I have the phone just standing alone it seems to work better, but every now and then (not really after a certain amount of time but every 3rd or 4th time I use the app) it will lock up in the same way. I have also tried a couple of different dock connectors, not just one, and had the same problems with both.

      Thanks for looking into it,
      Justin

      Hi Justin,

I'm still not having any luck reproducing this issue but I'll keep trying. I've got another dock at home I can try with this evening.

Just a wild question here, but is your dock close to your speakers/system?
I had an issue like this about a month ago. When I put my dock on top of one of my speakers my playback started getting hung up. When I moved it further away everything worked fine again.

Anyway, I'm sure that's not what you're seeing but I thought it would through it out there.

I'll keep looking into this. Any additional information you have would be helpful.

      Thanks for your time,

      -David

I've had the iPhone since the first generation and didn't know about the airplane plus wifi feature. Very cool!
    • I think it disconnects bluetooth also. Then you have to re-discovery the headset along with wifi. I use a Nokia BT stereo headset for my Rhap listening (excellent product imo). I'm going to wear out the Nokia and my iPhone now that Rhap is functioning closer to what I expect from a music service. When it works right it is just the greatest thing.

Rhapsody has either been stuck loading at the opening blue "rhapsody" screen or going into offline mode rather frequently and its been extremely slow, even w 4 bars and wifi it's weird.

And an idea for an update is what if you could have a tab for playlists that'd b so cool to b able to search them like an artist album or track. And then just the big problem of the search being so inaccurate. It's impossible to find the song u want sometimes since it pops up w random obscure songs at the top of the list. What about a power search option where u could search both artist and track that would help. Just some thoughts thanks for working so hard on this app!

    Hi Chuck,

2.0.4 addresses two playlist bugs. Here are the release notes:
    - Bug fix for issue where playlist downloads are not appearing with the presence of certain downloaded playlists.
    - Bug fix for issue of rare application crashes on playlist download.
